Abstract
Within the scope of this fellowship, metal-matrix composite (MMCs) of H13 tool steel (base matrix) reinforced with titanium carbide and silicon carbide (TiC and SiC) will be fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing. In order to enhance the lifetime of the forming tool further, super lubricants (comprised of base oil, ionic liquid and 2D nanoparticles) will be developed. Major aspects of this project are: (1) Development of the additive manufacturing process for metal matrix composite production, (2) Mechanical characterization of the fabricated MMCs and investigation of their frictional and wear properties under dry and lubricated condition with synthesized super lubricants, and (3) Life Cycle Assessment of the MMCs lubricated with super lubricants relative to current state of the art, to contribute to European circular economy and to attain the goal of sustainability. The career development offered by this fellowship will be complemented by structured transferable and complementary skills training provided by the host organisation. The results of the research will be disseminated through several high impact journal publications and possible intellectual property, including activities specifically targeting the general public and industries. The overall aim of the fellowship is to take the researcher to the next level of career progression, assisting to reach a position in industrial oriented research.
