Abstract

NEURO-MUSEUM starting assumption are: - Cultural heritage can foster human growth, in promoting integration, social inclusion and human well-being; - To gain these objectives, cultural learning in museums must find different and innovative forms; - Cultural learning in museums is strictly related to "individual, transformative encounter" and "personal appropriation; - What moved visitors will be more vividly remembered, then processed by them, becoming a very personal asset; Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca MUR - BANDO 2022 PNRR - Emotions’ role is crucial in cognitive processes: they overcome differences, eliminating cultural gaps and difficulties, and are an “inclusive tool”; - Emotional responses to the museum environment are influenced not only by the displayed objects nor by the information apparatus, but also by the spatial environment and its atmosphere; The main challenge lies in overcoming the usual concept of accessibility and inclusion intended as the possibility for everyone to have THE SAME cultural encounter and learning experience (which in itself is not possible,) but rather the possibility for everyone to have THEIR OWN experience related to cultural heritage. The project therefore focuses on the museum environment and intends to test visitors' reactions during the visit at both neurophysiological and cognitive levels. It doesn’t focus on disabilities, but instead on capabilities and possibilities; among these, the ability to be moved is common to all. Hence, external stimuli can be transformed into internal embodied experiences. The goals of this project are therefore: - to rework theoretical aspects of the current state of research from a multidisciplinary perspective (museography, heritage science, neuropsychological and cognitive sciences); - to identify measurable elements, and connected indicators, to be used in designing solutions and in assessing results; - to set a core experimental activity through at least two parallel pilots (each consisting of several experiments) to observe: 1) emotional responses in real spaces, comparing different spatial and cultural environments related to similar collections; 2) emotional responses in simulated environments, comparing responses to specific sensory components; and to comment on the connection between emotional and cognitive responses; - to develop a reliable theoretical model, where experiments and result can be replicated in other contexts; - to study different publics: regular, occasional and disaffected audiences (whatever the reasons), in order to include all of them, with particular consideration for the latter. - to investigate the empathic design principles[16], not for 'dedicated' solutions, but for multilevel, polysemic solutions to arouse emotions according to the most diverse channels. The project results will have a long impact, lasting beyond the project itself, being related to general context, including all audiences and referring to design principles.
