Biography

Rafael Natalio Fontana Crespo received his bachelor's degree in Electromechanical Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Cordoba (Argentina). In 2020, he started his M. Sc. degree in Mechatronics Engineering in Politecnico di Torino, which was framed on a double degree program with the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba (Argentina). He received the M. Sc. degree in Mechatronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino with a final grade of 110/110 cum laude in July 2022. Rafael is currently a Ph.D. candidate in computer engineering at Politecnico di Torino and is part of the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) group. His Ph.D. activities focus on designing and developing digital twins of real-world Wave Energy Converters (WEC), which are Renewable Energy Sources that produce energy from the sea waves. His activities comprise the usage of Machine Learning for forecasting energy production. Moreover, his research aims to employ Machine Learning techniques to develop surrogate models to be used during Wave Energy Converters design optimisation process. Furthermore, his activities include the development of a distributed software platform able to collect, store and retrieve all the sensed data.

His main research interests include the Internet of Things, smart cities, cloud technologies and machine learning for energy production and the development of surrogate models.
