Profile

Biography

Michele Re Fiorentin got his Ph.D. in theoretical Physics at the University of Southampton (UK), focusing on the development of Quantum Field Theory models in high energy Physics, supported by numerical simulations. From 2017 to 2023, he worked as postdoc researcher at the Center for Sustainable Future Technologies (CSFT) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. Since 2023, he has worked as assistant professor at Politecnico di Torino. His activities are devoted to the nanoscale modelling of materials applied to new technologies for sustainable energy and pollution reduction. In particular, in his research, he uses Density Functional Theory to study new materials for selective electroreduction of carbon dioxide and many-body perturbation theory to investigate the excited-state properties of novel 2-dimensional materials with possible application in photovoltaics and photocatalysis. MRF has collaborated to the realization of the 2021 YAMBO School and has been co-supervisor of masters and Ph.D. students at the Politecnico di Torino, University of Torino and Università di Roma "Tor Vergata". He was P.I. of the ISCRA-B project SPHERE, devoted to the study of electronic and optical properties of 2D systems, specifically addressing single photon emission, energy harvesting and exciton recombination, and ISCRA-B project GOLEM, on ab initio simulations of the optoelectronic properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through the creation of a statistical ensemble of amorphous rGO structures at various stoichiometry with DFT and post-DFT methods (GW+BSE) to investigate the shift in the absorption spectra and photoluminescence of rGO with the degree of oxidation.
