Research topics

  • Fiber optic sensors exploit the properties of light transmission through optical fibers to detect and measure various physical quantities such as temperature, strain, pressure, and chemical substances. These sensors have gained significant attention due to their numerous advantages over traditional sensing technologies. The research activity is focused at studying new approaches to enhance their performance, sensitivity, and applicability. This includes the development of novel sensing schemes, exploration of new fiber types and materials, and the investigation of advanced signal processing techniques. More in detail, the research involves the design and fabrication of novel structures to achieve highly sensitive sensors and the combination of multiple sensors along a single fiber or deploying arrays of interconnected fibers to create large-scale monitoring systems for structural health monitoring, environmental monitoring, or industrial process control. Examples are the development of fiber optic-based mechanical sensors with increased sensitivity and resolution by incorporating micro-mechanical systems or the fusion of fiber optic sensors with microfluidics or nanotechnology to enable the detection of specific chemicals or biomarkers with high precision and selectivity. Another important aspect of research is the development of advanced signal processing and data analysis techniques, including machine learning algorithms for real-time monitoring and pattern recognition to facilitates the early detection of anomalies or critical events.
  • Research activities on fiber lasers for industrial and biomedical applications have gained significant momentum in recent years due to the numerous advantages they offer over conventional lasers. Fiber lasers are based on an specialty rare-earth doped fibers as the gain medium and exhibit excellent beam quality, high power efficiency, compact size, and robustness, making them highly suitable for a wide range of industrial and biomedical applications. In the realm of industrial applications, the research focuses on increasing the power output and beam quality to enable high-speed and precision material processing, in particular of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing. In the field of biomedical applications, the research aims to address challenges both in diagnostics (e.g., fluorescence spectroscopy) and therapeutics (e.g., photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy, where laser energy is used to selectively destroy cancerous cells or treat various medical conditions), enabling targeted and minimally invasive treatments with improved patient outcomes.
