Biography

Giuseppe Tipaldo's career embodies a journey through academia, research, and innovation, underscored by a profound commitment to understanding the intersections between science and technology, media, politics and society. His research is marked by an interdisciplinary approach, blending insights from Sociology (particularly in the fields of Science and Technology studies), Computer-Assisted Text Analysis, and (digital) media studies. He has applied sociological imagination to the analysis of conflicts between epistemic authorities and their effects on politics and society. Particularly, he gained expertise in technoscientific conflicts, such as: 8 (local) opposition against mega-projects (waste treatment facilities, incinerators, industrial and power plants, new railway lines); 8 vaccine hesitancy; 8 science v so called "pseudo-science" or "alternative-knowledge" involving food, medical and environmental issues. Within the above briefly sketched framework, Tipaldo is currently keen on grasping trustworthy answers to some of the following cognitive questions: EPISTEMOLOGICAL LEVEL: ? are we currently living in an age of epistemic uncertainty, for which sociological reasons and with what long-term effects ? is there any evidence which links (probably not in a deterministic fashion) the most relativistic perspectives of post-modernism to the current epistemic wars that (what is considered to be) official science is battling with a plurality of alternative epistemic authorities? EMPIRICAL LEVEL (see current lines of research) METHODOLOGICAL LEVEL: ? Changes in Computer-Assisted Text Analysis (specifically semantic content analysis) with the popularisation of Gen-AI ? Source critique in the deep-fake age: methodological reflections and insights across (digital) social research, historiography and semiotics.
