Research topics

  • Tribology and contact mechanics. This activity aims to analyze the contact parameters ant their interaction with fretting wear. Special test rigs have been developed for this activity. The main features of these rigs are that the relative displacement between contact surfaces is measured with high accuracy (1 μm) and tests can be performed at high temperature (up to 1050 °C). High temperature is necessary if tests must be representative of the operational conditions of the aeroengine. The objective of these test is to evaluate the wear ratio (loss volume per unit cycle or dissipated energy) of the contact materials. Moreover, during the test contact parameters such as contact stiffness and friction coefficient are also measured. These parameters are of paramount importance to set a reliable contact model to simulate the dynamic behavior of systems with joint or contacts in general. The theoretical part of this activity is dedicated to set up wear and contact models. Wear models aims to mimic experimentally observed fretting wear with code fast and simple enough to be included into dynamic simulations. Contact models aims to calculate the contact stiffness, both along the normal and tangential direction, on geometry representative of the typical contacts in the aeroengine - shrouds, blade attachments, under-platform, ring dampers and more. The computation tools are validated on the geometries experimentally tested on the rigs.
