Department of Environment, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI)

Profile

Research interests

Doppler radar, cloud and snow microphysics, microwave radiometer

Biography

Dr. Battaglia is currently Associate Professor at the DIATI, Politecnico of Turin and in the Physics and Astronomy Department within the Earth Observation Science Group. He has teaching, tutoring and supervising responsibilities at the Batchelor, Master and Post Graduate level and he is pursuing an innovative research program. This is undertaken through international positions in major satellite missions, international collaborations and research grants awarded in the UK. He is currently PI of four research projects and co-I in one. Dr Battaglia is internationally recognized as one of the top-class experts in cloud and precipitation atmospheric radars. This is demonstrated by his involvement as Science Team member in the NASA-JAXA Global Precipitation Mission (with two NASA awards awarded as part of the Cal/Val team), as Level 2 Algorithm Developer Group member and Mission Advisory Group member for the up-coming ESA-JAXA Earth Explorer 6 EarthCARE mission. In 2018-19, thanks to his expertise in millimetre Doppler radars, he was also Member of the Mission Advisory Group of the ESA Earth Explorer 9 Candidate SKIM (Sea surface KInematics Multiscale monitoring) mission focussed at the study of ocean currents. He is member of several editorial boards of international journals. He has an excellent grant capture (~190k/year return for the University) from a variety of funding sources both at national and international level; funding agencies include ESA, NERC, UKSA, NCEO, US-Department of Energy.
