Biography

Biography and Research Statement
Riccardo Achille received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, where he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (DIMEAS).
His research activities focus on mechatronic systems, with particular interest in the modelling, simulation, and control of advanced actuation systems for aerospace applications. His research interests include electrohydraulic and electromechanical actuation, nonlinear dynamic modelling, fault-tolerant systems, fault detection and diagnosis, and reliability and safety analysis.
During his Ph.D., his research has mainly focused on the study of electrohydraulic actuation systems for aerospace applications, with particular attention to safety-critical and fault-tolerant architectures. His work involves the development of nonlinear dynamic models to analyse system behaviour under nominal and faulty operating conditions, as well as the investigation of control and diagnostic strategies for the detection and isolation of faults.
A relevant part of his research concerns the development of methods for improving the fault tolerance and reliability of mechatronic actuation systems while limiting system complexity. In this context, he investigates the interaction between the physical behaviour of system components, sensing, control, and fault-management functions.
His research also includes quantitative safety and reliability analysis, using methods such as Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). These methods are combined with modelling and simulation to evaluate the behaviour of actuation systems and their response to different failure conditions.
More generally, his research interests include mechatronic system design, electrohydraulic and electromechanical actuation, nonlinear system modelling, control, fault diagnosis, fault-tolerant architectures, and the reliability and safety of aerospace systems.
