Biography

Simone Salvadori is Associate Professor at the Department of Energy (DENERG) of Politecnico di Torino. He obtained his PhD in “Energetica e Tecnologie Industriali Innovative” at the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) of Università di Firenze, during which he performed a stage in the DAAP/H2T department of Office National d’Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) in Chatillon (FR). He has been involved in research projects funded by European Community, MIUR and the Region of Tuscany. He is used to work in cooperation with several institutions and industries (i.e., Avio Aero, EthosEnergy Italia, Nuovo Pignone Tecnologie, Pierburg Pump Technology Italy, von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics). His main research field is the high-fidelity numerical modeling of unsteady turbomachinery flows, with special interest in the analysis of both combustor/turbine interaction and cooling methods in conventional and "pressure gain" cycles. He is author of more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and of a monograph on the "Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines". He acts as Editorial Board member for MDPI Energies (ISSN 1996-1073), is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Aerospace Engineering (e-ISSN 2813-2831), and he is member of the organizing committee of a Summer School on Advanced Research in Turbomachinery (ART). He is Teaching Assistant since 2007 in both the fluid-dynamic and the turbomachinery fields. He has also been considered as supervisor for around 100 BSc, MSc and PhD theses.

Research topics

  • Development of computational codes for the study of compressible flows using high-fidelity methods, with particular attention to the study of the unsteady component interaction in gas turbines.
  • Development of enabling technologies for the realization of pressure-gain cycles for aircraft propulsion and power generation, with particular interest in the design of high-pressure turbine components.
  • Development of numerical methodologies for the optimization of turbomachinery components using adjoint methods and/or machine learning.
  • Study of the effect of epistemic and aleatory uncertainty on the behavior and residual life of turbomachinery components.
  • Use of numerical methodologies to study the impact of methane/hydrogen blends on pollutant production and on the risk of flashback in industrial and academic diffusive and premixed flame combustors.
