Biography

MSc in Chemical Engineering in 1999 and PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2002 at Politecnico di Torino, Ada Ferri has been Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Science and Technology of Politecnico di Torino (Italy) since 2014. She has twenty years of experience in research and innovation in the field of textile technology. Her scientific interests include functionalisation of textiles, thermo-physiological comfort of sportswear and sustainable dyeing and washing processes. She directs the activities of the Comfort Lab, which focuses on the development and validation of sportswear and sports equipment. Within the framework of regional, national and European projects, the Comfort LAb carries out research activities, in collaboration with leading textile and apparel companies and collaborates with national and international textile companies to develop industrial research and innovation projects. From 2018 to 2022, Ada Ferri is a member of the Governing Board of the Association of Universities for Textiles.

Scientific branch

ICHI-01/B - Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering
(Area 0009 - Industrial and information engineering)

Research topics

  • Development of dyeing and finishing processes for textile substrates using supercritical and/or liquid carbon dioxide as solvent. The analysis of the subject concerned thermodynamic aspects, such as measuring the solubility and partition coefficient of dyes between bath and fibre, the development of correlations for predicting the solubility of dyes, and more purely technical aspects, such as the design of equipment for dyeing and washing. Since 2018 this line of research has evolved thanks to international collaboration within the SMDTex international PhD project. The aim is to develop advanced functionalisations using photochromic dyes and multifunctional dyes with antibacterial properties.
  • In the area of thermal comfort, research activity is concerned with the assessment of heat exchange between the body and the environment, focusing on the fundamental role of clothing in terms of thermal and evaporative resistance. In addition to the company-funded activities, the research is based on academic collaboration with colleagues from other scientific fields, from the chemistry and technology of materials and the medical field, making the research activity multidisciplinary and collaborative.
