Biography

My name is Chiara Panico and I am currently a Ph.D. student in Computer and Systems Engineering. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Turin and a Master’s degree in Biodiversity and Evolution from Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna.

My doctoral project, entitled Statistical Learning of Genomic Data, focuses on the statistical analysis of genomic data. The research aims to explore the informational content of biological data through measures derived from information theory. The objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the functional and evolutionary properties of the genome by applying and developing clustering methods and quantitative metrics capable of revealing meaningful patterns in genomic data.
The project extends from the study and comparison of genes to the analysis of the pangenome, the complete set of genes present in a species, allowing for the exploration not only of a reference genome but also of the genetic richness and diversity that characterise populations.

Thanks to a background that combines evolutionary biology, biodiversity, and computational methodologies, my work focuses on analysing genomic complexity for understanding biological functions and evolutionary processes. My approach seeks to integrate information theory and genomics to provide a deeper interpretation of genetic variability.
