Research topics

  • Energy geostructures for shallow geothermal energy This research investigates the integration of geothermal systems into concrete structures in contact with the ground. Energy geostructures enable the exploitation of low-enthalpy geothermal energy while preserving their primary structural function, resulting in a significant reduction in installation costs compared to conventional geothermal systems. Applications include heating and cooling of buildings and infrastructures, as well as road de-icing.
  • This research focuses on tunnel design accounting for the time-dependent mechanical behavior of geomaterials, with particular emphasis on swelling phenomena and their implications for structural stability and long-term performance. The research activities also include the management and maintenance of existing tunnels, with reference to the experience gained in supporting major motorway concessionaires in the interpretation of defect patterns for the assessment of operational conditions, safety, and planning, as well as in the validation of maintenance measures and renovation interventions.
