Biography

Walter Gallego Gomez earned his bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Antioquia in 2015, and his master's degree in Computer Engineering, with a focus on Embedded Systems, from Politecnico di Torino in 2018. From 2018 to 2021, he worked at Marelli as an embedded software developer on automotive infotainment projects. He continued his career as a research assistant at Politecnico di Torino from 2021 to 2023.
In 2023 Walter began his PhD in Computer Engineering within the Electronic Design Automation Group at DAUIN, with a research grant from EBRAINS-Italy, working on activities aligned to the project.
His research lies at the intersection of life sciences and computing, focusing on three key areas: 1) The exploration/implementation of efficient bioinformatics algorithms for different applications, among them structural-aware RNA multi-sequence alignment, structural variants calling and base-calling, 2) The exploration of neuromorphic computing hardware and frameworks, with an emphasis on Loihi2 and Lava, and 3) The neuromorphic implementation of suitable bioinformatics algorithms.
Walter’s research involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams outside Politecnico, including researchers at the Candiolo Cancer Institute and participants in the Telluride Neuromorphic Cognition Engineering workshop.
