Biography

Valentina Cauda leads a research group of 25 people (including at present 3 full-time Researchers, 4 post-docs, 6 PhDs and 12 Master students) at DISAT- Politecnico di Torino. The main research topic is about theranostic nanomaterials, from wet chemical synthesis, chemical functionalization and physical-chemical characterization of metal oxide nanomaterials to drug delivery, stimuli-responsive activation, tumor cell targeting, and bio-imaging. Materials like zinc oxide, mesoporous silica, titania and metal (gold, silver) nanostructures are investigated. These NPs are then made biomimetic by coating them with either artificial and natural derived phospholipids, in particular those originating from extracellular vesicles. The laboratory also is expert in the isolation of extracellular vesicles and their re-engineering for advanced drug delivery and nanoimaging vehicles. More info at the web-site: www.tnhlab.polito.it/. Valentina has also established in 2021 the Start-up, U-Care Medical srl, to study, monitor and predict the insurgence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically hill patients. More info at: http://u-caremedical.com/. In 2025, she also founded a second start-up Hematica srl, aiming at finding engineered solutions for monitoring the filtering efficiency of hemodiafilters in dialysis machines, saving life to patients in ICUs.
