Politecnico di Torino on the ongoing situation in Gaza
On behalf of the community of Politecnico di Torino, the Rector, the Rector’s Board, the Academic Senate, and the Board of Governors express their indignation and reprimand for the ongoing massacre of the civilian population in Gaza.
Over the past months, Politecnico di Torino has consistently adopted a balanced stance, underpinned by an unwavering commitment to the values of pluralism and due process of law, most lately in events concerning the accusation of genocide brought against Israel by some states before the International Court of Justice.
In light of the balance and institutional conduct we have been acknowledged for, we now feel compelled to make an appeal to all consciences: without in the least failing to recall the heinous attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023, we firmly believe that the indiscriminate massacre of the civilian population ongoing in Gaza, which we witness daily, cannot be tolerated.
We urge all actors who can play a role to take immediate action to bring this massacre to an end.
We call on our government and the institutions of the European Union to make full use of all diplomatic means available to achieve and uphold a just and lasting peace.
We invite the Israeli academic community—with which we intend to carry on strong and fruitful scientific collaborations—to mobilize, through the ways and means allowed by democratic participation, to call on their government to balance the legitimate goal of national security with the proportionality in the measures employed to achieve such goal, and above all, with compassion and regard for the thousands of innocent human beings who are suffering in Gaza.
