PoliTO for Skopje European Capital of Culture 2028
New international collaborations are opening up for PoliTO in North Macedonia. In recent days, a delegation from the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) travelled to the capital city of Skopje to take part in a major event within the framework of “Skopje – European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2028”. On this occasion, an important Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the DAD and the local municipality, aimed at providing support for urban regeneration projects related to Skopje ECoC 2028.
The DAD delegation - comprising Director Michele Bonino, Professor Alessandro Armando, and researcher Ludovica Rolando - was part of an institutional delegation from Turin that also included Francesco Tresso, City Councilor of Turin, and Chiara Lucchini from Urban Lab Torino. The delegation took part in the international conference “The Skopje Project 2026: Culture, Urban Policies and Sustainable European Cities”, where the strategic dimensions of Skopje ECoC 2028 were discussed.
In particular, Professors Bonino and Armando took part in the session “From Policy to Practice – Culture as a Driver of Urban Innovation”, sharing the DAD’s experience within the context of excellence of research in Turin. Their contribution focused on the role of culture as a catalyst for urban innovation, engaging in an open dialogue with international experts.
This was followed by the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Skopje and DAD PoliTO. The agreement, signed by Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski and DAD Director Michele Bonino, establishes a strategic partnership that opens up new research opportunities for the University. In particular, the DAD will support the Municipality of Skopje in the field of urban regeneration and built heritage conservation, with a specific focus on the city’s riverfront and on the system of 50 new micro‑parks planned for completion by 2028. This collaboration strengthens a relationship that has been in place for over a decade between the DAD and the local context - especially with Ss. Cyril and Methodius University - and represents a further step forward in PoliTO internationalization strategy.
The Vice‑Rector for International Affairs, Alberto Sapora, commented: “This initiative is part of the broader European framework of policies for culture and urban development, and it confirms the commitment of Politecnico di Torino to strengthening international collaborations. PoliTO places its expertise at the service of local territories, contributing, through dialogue with local institutions, to strategic processes of urban and cultural transformation".
DAD Director Michele Bonino added: “This represents an important opportunity to share PoliTO skills and expertise with our Macedonian partners, with the aim of developing collaboration between academic institutions and public bodies. Our department has extensive experience in this type of cooperation, which we will put into practice to support urban transformation in Skopje, both within the framework of the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) themes and through advisory activities related to the preparation of the new Master Plan.".
