The Energy Center Lab at the Politecnico di Torino, headed by Professor Romano Borchiellini, has once again demonstrated its excellence in energy research. A team of three PhD students of the Energy department - supervised by Professor Andrea Lanzini and with the invaluable support of Dr. Daniele Salvatore Schiera - secured first place in the prestigious Huawei Tech Arena Challenge, held on December 19, 2024, in Nürnberg, Germany.

The team, composed of Lorenzo Giannuzzo, Elena Rozzi, and Marcel Stolte, outperformed 54 teams from across Europe with their innovative approach to state-of-charge (SOC) estimation for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Their solution, which combined an equivalent circuit model, Kalman filter, and artificial neural network, effectively addressed the complexities of SOC estimation - a challenging aspect of battery technology due to the near-flat open-circuit voltage (OCV) profile across different SOC levels.

Representing the team at the event, Lorenzo Giannuzzo presented their work and accepted the €6,000 prize awarded by a panel of Huawei algorithm experts (photo).

Reflecting on their achievement, the team stated: “Participating in the Huawei Tech Arena Challenge was an exciting and enriching experience. It pushed us to apply our research in a highly competitive and practical setting, fostering creativity and collaboration. We are proud to represent the Energy Center Lab and grateful for the support that made this success possible.”

The achievement underscores the cutting-edge research environment at the Energy Center Lab, where state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration drive innovation in energy systems, from storage technologies to sustainable energy production. This victory further cements the Politecnico di Torino’s leadership in energy research and its commitment to addressing critical technological challenges.
