DAD in Belgrade for the European TNE DeSK Project
A new milestone for the European project TNE-DeSK, in which PoliTO is a partner thanks to the work of the Department of Architecture and Design – DAD, whose delegation took part in the TNE-DeSK Project two-day event, hosted at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade, partner of the event together with the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University of Skopje.
TNE DeSK (TransNational Education – Developing Shared Knowledge in Innovative Materials and Digital Transformation for Sustainable Economy and Green Transition) is an international project funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) under the Next Generation EU program. It builds on the previous PhD Trilateral Agreement, signed in 2023 by the three directors Michele Bonino (DAD PoliTO), Vladimir Lojanica (Belgrade), and Ognen Marina (Skopje), which made it possible to expand the partnership to the schools of architecture of Tirana and Podgorica, within an international network of more than 60 partners led by Università di Bari Aldo Moro.
The event unfolded through three main moments: PhD Talks, Guest Lectures, and an Exhibition.
The PhD Talks involved doctoral candidates currently in the final stages of their research in Belgrade, Turin, and Skopje, and were organized into four thematic sessions dedicated to: Architecture, Memory and the Interpretation of Value; Spatial Patterns and Design Frameworks in Contemporary Architecture; Drawing, Speculation and Design Process; Architecture, Agency and Social Inclusion.
As a visiting professor, DAD Director Michele Bonino delivered the lecture “Constructing La Biennale: behind the scenes of the Venice Biennale”, presenting the special project curated by DAD for the most recent edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale. “Constructing La Biennale” offers an interpretation of the exhibition as a complex process, highlighting the material and organizational infrastructures that sustain its realization. The lecture was followed by professor Ognen Marina’s talk on Skopje European Capital of Culture 2028.
The two-day program concluded with the opening of the exhibition “Sava Blocks, New Belgrade. Rethinking Modernity”, curated by Jelena Ristić Trajković, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. The exhibition presented the results of a semester-long collaboration involving three courses at the PoliTO School of Architecture and Design (two design studios and one theory of architecture course) and three design studios at the University of Belgrade. While working in parallel on the same site the Sava Blocks of New Belgrade, a system of large modernist blocks built between the 1960s and 1970s the students explored transformation strategies employing different methodologies and scales, highlighting the value of design as both a critical and operational tool, and the importance of collaborative teaching as a platform for design experimentation.
The DAD delegation included Director Michele Bonino, Valeria Federighi, Caterina Barioglio, Federica Joe Gardella, and Giovanni Ceselli.
Participation in the TNE-DeSK project and the Belgrade event confirms DAD’s commitment to promoting the internationalization of teaching and research, strengthening strategic collaborative networks and contributing to the development of advanced skills related to ecological and urban transition.
