THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings: Politecnico Climbs 50 Places and Ranks Among the World’s Leading Universities

THE - Times Higher Education has published the new international university ranking, the ISR - Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, launched in partnership with Schmidt Science Fellows. The ranking measures the contributions and commitment of universities worldwide to interdisciplinary research.

The ISR aims to assess universities’ contributions and engagement in interdisciplinary research, which seeks to bring together expertise from different research fields to address global challenges.

This mission lies at the heart of Politecnico’s work, and this year the University has achieved a significant result, climbing more than 50 places in the ranking, from 68th position last year to 16th in the edition released today. This represents the largest rise in Europe and one of the strongest performances worldwide. The ranking assesses 911 universities across 94 countries, 22% more institutions than in the previous edition, a factor that further enhances the significance of Politecnico di Torino’s achievement, placing it fourth in Europe. Among the reasons cited for this improvement are “significant progress in the area dedicated to internal processes, thanks to the integration of interdisciplinarity into career evaluation criteria and the strengthening of administrative coordination”, as stated in the report.

To be included in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, universities must meet rigorous criteria: participation in the THE World University Rankings; the production of at least 100 interdisciplinary publications in the period 2020-2024; a minimum of 50 academic and research staff members across different disciplinary areas; and assessment in at least 9 of the 11 prescribed metrics.

The ranking is based on data already submitted for the THE World University Rankings (relating to the subject areas Arts & Humanities - Architecture and Engineering & Technology), supplemented by the results of a survey dedicated to interdisciplinary research and by bibliometric analyses conducted by Elsevier.

“The outstanding performance in the ranking published by THE, one of the most significant worldwide, is a source of great satisfaction and demonstrates how our commitment to fostering an interdisciplinary environment must be further strengthened, while continuously enhancing our action across the University’s core missions,” comments Rector Stefano Corgnati. “Focusing on the ability to combine diverse yet complementary approaches and expertise, together with strong operational links with businesses, institutions and local stakeholders, with a dual focus on local and international development, continues to prove the right path for successfully addressing the new global challenges characterised by talent attraction and competitiveness.”
