Biography
Alessandro Mantelero is Associate Professor of Private Law at Polytechnic University of Turin, where he also teaches Law & Technology (MSc), Data Ethics & Data Protection (MSc), and Digital Societies & Law (Ph.D.). In 2022 he was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in Mediterranean Digital Societies and Law by the European Commission in recognition of excellence in European Union Studies. He is a member of the Support Pool of Experts of the European Data Protection Board, the OECD.AI Expert Group on AI, Data, and Privacy, and a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) expert on human rights and AI. From 2016 to 2022, he served as scientific expert for the Council of Europe on AI, data protection and human rights (Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence – CAHAI, Convention 108 – Consultative Committee). As an expert on data regulation, AI, and human rights, he has advised several organizations, including the United Nations, the European Commission, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, the Italian Ministry of Justice, the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, and the Brazilian Federal Senate. He regularly acts as an independent ethics reviewer for the ERC Executive Agency and other EU agencies. He has held visiting appointments in several universities, including Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, Nanjing – NUITS, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Universidad de Murcia, and joined the University of Oxford as a visiting research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute in 2013 and 2014, working on data protection and Big Data. He is an affiliate at the European Public Law Organization - Institute for Privacy Law, Data Protection and Technology in Athens and the Center for AI and Digital Policy in Washington. He is Associate Editor of Computer Law & Security Review and member of the editorial boards of European Data Protection Law Review, Innovación y Derecho Digital, IDP:Revista d'Internet, Dret i Política, and Diritto dell’informazione e dell’informatica.
