Communication and digital transformation

The thematic area includes highly transversal and multi-cross-transdisciplinary research areas, ranging from increasingly connected construction and monitoring technologies to typical digital and communication applications such as apps, websites, AR, VR and XR, in various sectors and at various scales: from the city and smart buildings to digital objects, from service robotics to transportation, up to the specific sectors of healthcare, including specifically designed applications supporting elderly and people with needs. The disciplines of design, architectural technology, building production and environmental technical physics deal with the issue in a synergistic and transdisciplinary way, placing the value of interaction, user experience and communication languages at the center of experimentation.

Research areas

The thematic macro-area is divided into sub-areas of research and design that the disciplines of the doctorate deal with in an interdisciplinary way:

  • the project of interaction (ID), analogue and digital, in the declinations of digital interfaces (UI), of the evaluation of the user experience and of the co-design with the users;
  • the communication project through the languages of visual design and storytelling, with the contribution of digital, multimedia, augmented and immersive virtual reality tools;
  • the development and application of solutions, systems and services for smart building (ICT and IoT), considering the scenarios of energy transition and climate change;
  • the project of the interaction (ID) building - user, through verifiable plant and envelope components and systems;
  • the monitoring of energy-environmental performance and their optimization at different scales and the real-time use of monitoring data and the interface with the occupant;
  • digital twins and the modelling of buildings and components at different scales in order to study and analyse their behaviours, including the analysis of the different project and/or operational scenarios, their functioning and performance also in terms of supporting design/operational choices and optimisations, including the forecasting dimension.
