The master's degree becomes ICT Engineering for Smart Societies

Smart societies evolving fast

Starting 2025/26, the master's degree ICT for Smart Societies will add Engineering to its title. This may look a small change, but we thought it was necessary to underline that this is indeed an engineering master's degree and, at the end, you will become an ICT engineer.

Anyway, this is not the only change. The recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence have deeply affected the technologies employed in smart societies. To reflect this, we updated most of the courses in ICTE4SS, and we introduced new ones.

The course Machine learning and neural networks will now focus on the basics of machine learning and deep learning, while the course Machine learning for health will show how those techniques can be applied in several medical and diagnostic problems.

The new course Advanced machine learning for imaging and vision will introduce more advanced techniques in this field, like transformers and diffusion models.

The course Intelligent building optimisation will focus on the use of advanced modelling techniques, like digital twins, to reduce energy consumption in buildings. The course Satellite systems for positioning and maps will introduce satellite technologies like GPS and Galileo, that have become indispensable tools for determining precise user locations and understanding movement patterns.

You can find the new study plan here. The information you find in the course web pages is still preliminary. In the coming weeks, ICTE4SS web site will be progressively updated to introduce and describe all changes.
