Abstract
Growing scientific evidence suggests that the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract do act as a functional and pathologic continuum. Indeed, there is a need for a deeper characterization of the microbiome-host interaction in these two interconnected anatomical niches in health and disease, together with a longitudinal assessment of potential changes after microbiome-targeted interventions. Therefore, scope of this research is to integrate and compare distinctive multi-specimen, multiOMICS profiles of subjects with oral health and patients with severe periodontitis in order to achieve a better understanding of the physiopathology of the gum-gut axis for future precision medicine applications.
