The project investigates the role of Italian innovative start-ups in the circular economy (CE) domain and related policies to the circular transition. It provides data on regional entrepreneurial dynamics in the CE domain and identifies Circular Innovative Startups (CIS) by using advanced topic recognition algorithms. Leveraging the iStar database, which integrates data on the whole population of startups from the Italian Registry of Innovative Startups with economic-financial data from AIDA by Bureau van Dijk®, patent information from PATSTAT, regional socio-economic information from ISTAT and Eurostat, access to policy measures from Invitalia, the project aims to reliably assign innovative startups to the CE domain, and develop taxonomies within it. The data will be used to create CIS indicators at the regional level that will feed into the AMELIA Platform aiding in characterizing innovations for CE transition, the development of models and scenarios to simulate trends and evolutionary patterns of technological trajectories as well as local patterns of interactions among institutional actors, and the implementation of the Circular Innovation Monitor. The final aim will be to provide useful information to stakeholders and policymakers for making informed decisions for their smart specialization strategies toward the circular transition.
