Abstract

The Italian territory is characterized by high variability in the climate and is affected by the occurrence of extreme rainfall events highly localised in space and time. The vulnerability to such events is exacerbated by the complex morphological setting. The most significant recent catastrophic flood events have been reported in small basins (area

In this regard, one of the main uncertainties concerns the understanding of the behavior of soil during extreme events, synthetically conceptualized in the runoff coefficient, i.e. the percentage of non-infiltrated rainfall that produces runoff volumes. The main goal of FRISBEE is to develop a robust procedure to assess the hydrologic response of small basins in the whole Italian territory to extreme rainfall events through analysis and mapping of runoff coefficients, at very high (1 km) spatial resolution. For this purpose, we will integrate long-term in-situ data records with spatially distributed remote sensing observations. The combined use of such datasets, developed by the project partners, will constitute the first attempt to assess the small basins flood hazard in Italy.
