Building information modelling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional features of places and components. The research project has the aim of defining a methodology in which the BIM technology can be used for unconventional purposes to realize 3D databases of small objects, especially those belonging to large museum collections that require the precise accuracy of each component to preserve and share knowledge about them. The goal will be to set up a new procedure that will be able to take advantage of the different levels of knowledge of objects in a museum: Scientific Research, Data Management, Virtual Platform for Dissemination. As the metric survey techniques that are currently available to record the geometry of small objects are able to realize detailed point clouds with a submillimetric resolution, a special attention will be paid during the conversion of these data into a compatible geometric BIM structure, oriented towards a parametrization approach, while preserving high metric quality. The BIM technology usually requires a simplification of the point clouds according to the final aims of the modeling: small differences between the acquired 3D data and the final parametric models have to be discussed case by case, and a shared strategy has to be defined. A 3D database should be organized to offer the final user the possibility of accessing information to manage/monitor/restore and document objects in a museum. The project will involve applying the proposed methodology to some small objects that belong to the collection of the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (Museo Egizio) of Turin. The achieved BIM models will be used to show how museums can use them for different uses: to monitor their collections (3D repository linked to a database) and to offer the users (visitors) the possibility of exploring objects stored in their depots and storerooms which are not exposed.
