The aim of the project is to perform a techno-economic feasibility analysis to assess the capability of local renewables together with hydrogen-based devices to cover both electrical loads (H2 for storage) and green fuel (H2 for mobility) demand for local mobility in Gran Canaria island. More specifically, the main interests rely in the opportunity to analyse the extension of the scope of the REMOTE project (H2020 project 779541), (i.e., satisfying the electrical demand of a cattle farm in La Aldea) towards the usage of local renewables together with hydrogen-based devices to cover also demand for green local transport. The REMOTE demonstration site is used in the present project as robust starting point to further investigate the benefits derived from additional uses of hydrogen. Here we consider the installation of a small fleet of fuel cell minibuses to connect La Aldea to the most populous city of the island, Las Palmas. The project is thus of high interest for the community since the chosen transport route connects a wide fraction of the island (9 municipalities from El Furel to Las Palmas) by means of an CO2-free solution. A preliminary techno-economic assessment of the hydrogen mobility service has been carried out. It includes PV panel system (1 MW), electrolyzer (0.5 MW), the pressurized hydrogen tank (300 kg), the hydrogen refuelling station (150 kg/day) and the hydrogen buses (3). The total investment cost is around 4.35 M€. Supposing a project lifetime of 20 years, the total net present cost is around 6.3 M€, without considering carbon credits valorization (the fossil diesel-based solution is only slightly lower, 6.1 M€). Starting from these first estimations, the project aims at developing a methodology for the optimal sizing and scheduling of the hybrid P2P-P2H system. A single-layer MILP model will be formulated, which means that design and scheduling problems are optimized together. The model will be then employed to evaluate the sizes of all the components required for the proposed poly-generation system, and the day-by-day operation of the system itself, to get the lowest possible system cost. Moreover, the applicability of the proposed sizing method will go beyond this specific case study. We expect it to be a highly flexible and powerful technique easily adaptable to different kinds of isolated and remote areas characterized by different RES (e.g., wind, sun and tidal energy) and loads (electrical, transport fuels, heating and cooling).
