Abstract
EVEREST addresses the “expected outcome” and “scope” of the CL5-2025-04-D5-05 topic by developing and demonstrating innovative, user-centric, and cost-effective thermal and energy management solutions for battery-electric LDVs and LCVs that maintain driving range under extreme weather while accounting for personalised thermal comfort. A key focus is identifying and validating user requirements, usage patterns, and acceptance limits. By integrating these insights, EVEREST will reduce climaterelated range loss by at least 30% compared to the state of the art and achieve a 10% reduction in overall energy demand through predictive, AI-based control strategies aligned with future smart-city standards. The project applies a system-level approach combining advanced thermal technologies, intelligent control, and user-centred design across the innovation chain: from component development and virtual integration to real-world demonstration and evaluation.
Activities are structured into three AREAs: AREA I - Thermal management technologies: (1) CO2-hydrocarbon AC system, (2) thermal energy storage with dehumidification, (3) air-air heat exchanger, (4) infrared and contact heating, (5) improved cabin insulation, (6) user-specific interior design, (7) thermal comfort model, (8) user-centred HMI and App, (9) ECU for integrated control. AREA II - Virtual demonstrators and control: (10) virtual demonstrators with all innovations and comfort model, (11) energy/thermal management strategy including grid connectivity, predictive and AI-based functions, and personalised comfort optimisation. AREA III - Real-world demonstrators and evaluation: Integration and testing in relevant environments, including user studies personalised comfort thresholds, plus baseline vs. improved vehicle testing. EVEREST’s primary impact targets LDV and LCVs, with Technology Bricks expected to equip 2.1-3.6 million vehicles annually by 2035, while remaining applicable to other vehicle categories.
