Biografia

I’m Stefania Cucco and I’m a PhD student in electronic engineering at Politecnico di Torino, where I have concluded my Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering (curriculum “Micro and Nano Systems”) in the graduation session April 2022. Previously, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Physical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino.

I concluded my MS Thesis in the research group coordinated by Professor Mariangela Gioannini at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET) of the Politecnico di Torino in collaboration of the company Cisco Systems (US). I developed three modelling blocks for the design of silicon micro-ring resonators to be employed in silicon photonic integrated circuits as laser mirrors, to get closer to the integration of a laser source in CMOS technology. During the thesis I performed optical, thermal and carrier distribution simulations by commercial software and CAD tools.

My PhD will continue my thesis project relative to ring resonator design for hybrid III-V on silicon tunable laser. I will improve the three modeling blocks, in order that the results of the simulations are comparable with the measurements taken in the laboratory. Subsequently, the dynamic study of the laser will be carried out: to obtain stable and narrow linewidth lasers when non-linearities are minimized through careful design, or to achieve chaotic pulsations/regimes when instead non-linearities are transformed into positive effects to generate new laser dynamic regimes.

Thanks to these activities, I am appreciating the possibility of working in an international research group in close contact with a company interested in the industrial application of research results, and I also enjoy working in a team.
