Biografia

Sofia Darbesio is a PhD candidate in Urban and Regional Development at Politecnico di Torino (XXXIX Cycle), where she earned her Master’s degree in Architecture for Heritage in 2023, graduating with 110/110 cum laude. Her doctoral research is co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research and Inmatica SpA within the Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR – NextGenerationEU), pursuant to Ministerial Decree No. 117/2023. Her research investigates Large Language Model-enabled methods for analysing and documenting urban transformations, with particular attention to contemporary mobility infrastructures, large-scale construction processes and their relationships with historic urban environments.
She contributes to national and international interdisciplinary research activities, including the Horizon Europe project RESILIAGE – Advancing holistic understanding of community RESILIence and heritAGE drivers through community-based methodologies (2023–2026), at the intersection of cultural heritage, community resilience and digital methodologies. Since 2026, she has also collaborated with the Interdepartmental Research Centre “Digital Scholarship for the Humanities” (DISH) at the University of Turin.

Her doctoral research includes several international visiting periods. In 2024, she was a visiting PhD researcher at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP), under the supervision of Professor Teresa Cunha Ferreira. In 2025, she was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage Studies (DKES), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), under the mentorship of Professor Nicola Lercari. She is currently a visiting researcher at the University of Ljubljana – Faculty of Computer and Information Science, following her selection through the visiting researchers call of the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Digital Humanities (AI4DH), where she is exploring Generative AI approaches for semantic information extraction and knowledge structuring from architectural and technical documentation.
Alongside her research, she contributes to teaching activities at Politecnico di Torino within the Master’s programmes in Architecture for Heritage and Digital Skills for Sustainable Societal Transitions. She also served as a tutor for the 2025 RESILIAGE Summer School Mobilising Inclusive Heritage Drivers for Disaster Resilient Communities.

  • Student Prize in the post-1900 history category at the 16th Conference of the European Association of Urban History (EAUH) - Cities at the Boundaries, held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, from 4 to 7 September 2024. Presented the paper "Unveiling and Overcoming Cultural-Spatial Boundaries with Digital Narratives in Multiple Historical Segments: Piazza Municipio in Naples" as a speaker in the session "M34 - Crossing Boundaries through (Digital) Narratives".   • Awarded for the poster "Reconstructing Urban Transformations: Digital Humanities for the Documentation of Large-Scale Construction Sites in Historic Cities", selected among the winners in the poster competition at the Digital Humanities @ Oxford Summer School 2025, held from 4–8 August 2025 at the University of Oxford (UK).
