Abstract
Across the Alpine Space, climate change and evolving tourism trends have left behind a growing number of obsolete ski infrastructures (OBSI). These sites often fragment habitats, degrade landscapes, contribute to pollution, and limit opportunities for sustainable land use. Yet, despite their widespread impact, there is no shared Alpine-wide strategy or dataset to address them in a coordinated way. The project “Participatory Revitalization of Alpine Landscapes and nature impacted by obsolete Ski infrastructures” (ReSkiLience) tackles this transnational challenge by promoting actions to restore degraded Alpine landscapes and enhance biodiversity. The project brings together 11 partners from 5 countries to jointly identify, map, and assess OBSI, and to transform selected sites into ecological and cultural assets.
Through a citizen science approach, local communities and stakeholders will be actively involved in data collection, awareness-raising, and co-designed processes. In WP1, the project will develop a harmonised Alpine methodology for mapping and assessing OBSI, integrating ecological, spatial, and regulatory dimensions. WP2 will focus on testing sustainable dismantling and reuse solutions in pilot areas, producing feasibility studies and technical guidelines. WP3 will support policy integration and regional upscaling through transnational policy pathways and awareness campaigns. By combining grassroots engagement with strategic planning, ReSkiLience fosters long-term stewardship of Alpine landscapes and supports the shift toward sustainable land use. The project contributes directly to nature protection, biodiversity restoration, and pollution reduction, offering scalable solutions for other mountainous regions facing similar challenges.
