Abstract

The development of nanoscale molecular sensors represents a breakthrough in detection technology, offering unprecedented sensitivity and specificity for identifying single molecules, within the context of organic electronics, thus promising for realizing sustainable technologies. This innovation enables the detection of trace concentrations of substances previously undetectable by traditional sensors, crucial for monitoring environmental pollutants and hazardous compounds threatening human health. Achieving these molecular devices requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating computational chemistry analysis, experimental nanofabrication, nanocaracterization, and nano-level sensor integration engineering. This project aims to foster collaboration between two universities to realize molecular sensors. POLITO specializes in quantum chemistry simulations for electronic device modelling, while POLSL excels in experimental deposition and nano-characterization techniques. Building upon previous research fabricating gold nanoelectrodes for single-molecule junction-based aflatoxin sensors, the TENS project anticipates deploying sustainable nanosensors utilizing a poly-pyrrole-dithiolate channel sensitive to aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are highly toxic carcinogenic compounds produced by certain molds commonly found in foodstuffs such as grains, nuts, and spices. Leveraging mobility, the project seeks to advance the measurement and realization of these sensors. Emphasizing the design, fabrication, and optimization of sensors for efficient aflatoxin detection and quantification, the project holds promise for enhancing food safety protocols and promoting improved health outcomes, as well al for developing sustainable electronic sensors. Additionally, the project aims to facilitate knowledge exchange between POLSL and POLITO, enriching research and teaching laboratories.
