Biography

Alessia Monaco is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Architecture and Design of Politecnico di Torino since 2025, where she previously served as a fixed-term Researcher from 2018. In 2014, she obtained a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Palermo, with a thesis entitled “Experimental analysis, numerical and analytical modeling of the shear strength mechanisms in Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams”, after earning a Master’s degree in Building Engineering-Architecture from the same university in 2009. She is an expert in numerical analysis of structures, with particular focus on masonry constructions, reinforced concrete frame systems, and prefabricated steel-concrete composite lattice beams. She is also an expert in the numerical modelling of quasi-brittle materials and contact problems. She has gained experience in structural strengthening using conventional and innovative composite materials, including FRP systems and TRM composites, both traditional and made with natural and bio-fibres. She is the author of over 90 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters (https://iris.polito.it/), of which more than 60 are available in the Scopus database (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=55982064700). She has delivered over 25 oral presentations at national and international conferences in the field and has given invited lectures at doctoral schools and in training courses and seminars at national and international academies. She has organised special conference sessions and special journal issues dedicated to masonry structures and vaults, as well as to the use of composite systems for the structural strengthening of masonry. She has carried out research activities abroad and currently collaborates with the RILEM TC-290 research group, “Durability of Inorganic Matrix Composites used for Strengthening of Masonry Constructions”, and is a member of the IIFC International Institute for FRP in Construction – Task Group 1, “Sustainable Fibre Composite Materials”. She is a co-inventor of a patent concerning a seismic dissipation device for reinforced concrete structures (No. 102019000016742). She was PI of a national research project entitled “Structural Rehabilitation of Vaults in Heritage Asset Learning: collapse identification and design of compatible strengthening systems supported by adaptive 3D models (REVHEAL)” under the PRIN 2022 PNRR Ministerial Programme (Prot. No. P2022ZJWS3), and is currently deputy PI of a national research project entitled “REtrofitting Historic Architecture foR Zero Emissions (REHARZE)” under the PRIN 2022 Ministerial Programme (Prot. No. 2022HRCNSL), concerning the retrofitting of masonry constructions using innovative composite materials.
