Biography

Dr. Balagna Cristina is currently a Senior Assistant Researcher in Material Science and Technology at Politecnico di Torino, where she received her PhD in Materials Science and Technology in 2011 and her Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2007. Her main current academic and research interests include nanostructured antimicrobial/virucidal coatings deposited on different types of materials for aerospace, civil and biomedical applications and for the filtration field. She was the Principal Investigator in EU project Manunet III Transnational project BIO-kILLER – antiBIOpollutant coatIng for reusabLe filter (2019-2021 Coordinator: GV Filtri (IT); Partner: Mosnic Irudex (E)), regarding the development of anti-pathogen coatings on filters for the treatment of air and metalcutting solution. She was the Principal Investigator and Scientific Responsible of a research contract with air filtration system company and the Responsible of the coordination team, project management and implementation of a “Proof of Concept” project related to the patent "Procedure for the application of an antiviral coating to a substrate and related coating" funded by Politecnico di Torino and Compagnia San Paolo (2018 – 2019). She participated in the scientific research activity of many European, national and international projects. She was the co-organizer of the International Workshop “Advanced Materials for High Growth Industries: From the PhD to Industrial Innovation” at Politecnico di Torino (3 - 4 October 2018) and she is the co-organizer of the Bioceramics Symposium of annual ICACC in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA, since 2021. She is a co-author of the patent “Method for the application of an antiviral coating to a substrate and relative coating” - Ferraris, Balagna, Perero, PCT/IB2018/057639 - WO2019/082001, and some royalties have been recently licensed. She is involved in the supervision and co-tutor of the scientific activity of several undergraduate and PhD students and she is actually the co-tutor of 1 PhD student. Cristina Balagna has about 26 peer-reviewed journal publications, one patent, 3 book chapters and several contributions in conference proceedings.
