Abstract

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is used to manage comfort in occupied spaces, resulting in 61% of the energy use in Canadian buildings and reduced fuel economy in vehicles. Windows in both buildings and vehicles are a key contributor to energy consumption, causing increased heating or cooling needs. 3E Nano has developed an improved energy-control coating, designed to change the properties of windows, making them more energy efficient by increasing energy retention or rejection without reducing visual clarity. The coating can be applied to glass or polymer (plastic) films and used for architectural windows, greenhouses and automotive glass; or as a retrofit for existing windows. Coatings can also be customized to suit different geographic needs for heating or cooling. Moreover, these energy-control coatings can be economically integrated in dynamic window facades providing effective daylighting and energy control, and in windshields providing additional active heating functionality for instant defogging/deicing. 3E Nano will produce its coatings to be equivalent to or better than competing state-of-the art technology for up to one-third of the cost while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
