SEE:4C at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2026: an installation and a book from Politecnico di Torino
The SEE:4C research group, led by the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) of the Politecnico di Torino with the universities of Belgrade, Podgorica, Skopje and Tirana, has been selected for the 8th Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB 2026, 9 September – 30 November) to exhibit its research. It brings two linked contributions to the Estonian biennale: the installation “Load Bearing” and the launch of the book that concludes the research activities, “SEE4C. South-Eastern Europe: 4 Cities” (Quodlibet, 2026).
TAB 2026, titled How Much?, examines architecture’s relationship with its cost and value. SEE:4C - LOAD BEARING answers from the ground of two years of fieldwork in four South-Eastern European capitals, Belgrade, Podgorica, Skopje and Tirana, reading the legacy of socialist mass housing built between the 1960s and the 1980s. Against a market logic that equates value with price, the project argues that these neighbourhoods hold a social and environmental wealth that conventional cost accounting fails to register.
The installation “Load Bearing” takes its title from a structural term and lets it carry the weight of history. Six panels of an almost ethereal lightness hang from the ceiling to form an octagonal enclosure that visitors step inside; on their faces run the project’s three interpretive lenses — Timing, Legacy and Agency — together with maps, drawings and diagrams from the fieldwork.
The opening day also marks the launch of the book that concludes the research. “SEE4C. South-Eastern Europe: 4 Cities”, edited by Alessandro Armando, Valeria Federighi and Ludovica Rolando, is launched at the Biennale on Wednesday 9 September 2026 (16:00–17:30). The volume gathers essays, archival material, photography and drawings into a method for reading the socialist city as a living resource.
Started as SEE4C research group, “Load Bearing” exhibition is coordinated at Politecnico di Torino by a DAD team led by head curator Ludovica Rolando, with a curatorial team (Alessandro Armando, Valeria Federighi, Ognen Marina, Vladimir Lojanica, Jelena Ristić Trajković, Mariolina Affatato and Irene Carrozzo) in a multi-nodal collaboration with the faculties of architecture of Belgrade, Podgorica, Skopje and Tirana. Over two years the SEE:4C project moved some thirty scholars between Turin and the four capitals, building shared research supported by the TNE-DeSK framework and funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
