Assessing impacts of demographic trends in rural territories. Research methods in Europe and Japan
On 8 July 2026 at 8,30 am the seminar "Assessing impacts of demographic trends in rural territories. Research methods in Europe and Japan" will be held online.
Demographic change in rural areas is a concern worldwide. In particular, demographic decline is a long-lasting phenomenon in some countries, such as Japan, which can assess its impacts, while it is a new trend for other countries, which are starting to reflect on symptoms, definitions, and future scenarios.
This seminar aims to explore what we know about the impact of demographic change in rural areas. It brings together researchers from the EU and Japan to discuss how demographic trends in rural areas are defined and assessed, based on what data and methods, at what level of detail. The seminar investigates what dimensions of this phenomenon are considered (social, economic, environment, etc.), how these are interrelated, as well as how to assess and classify the possible resulting clusters.
This seminar is organized as part of WP1 “Understanding driving forces and impacts of demographic trends in rural EU” and, in particular, Task 1.1 “Narratives and indicators of demographic change”.
The seminar is jointly organized by The University of Tokyo and DIST within the Horizon Project REROOTED Resilient European Rural Outlooks: Opportunities for Transformation, Empowerment and Development
