Disordered Materials and Quantum Devices

The research aims at investigating the basic physical processes underlying the functioning of polycrystalline semiconductors and superconductors on the basis of current noise investigation. One debated point concerns the mechanism of charge transport and the role of traps. Current noise measurements can provide very deep insight in the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors. We have demonstrated that the noise analysis can be particularly useful when the nonuniform charge distribution due to the presence extended defect at the metal-semiconductor interface or at the grain boundary should be considered in the description of the device. We study current noise and I-V characteristics of polycrystalline polyacene layers in the dark and in the presence of monochromatic radiation.
Furthermore we are concerned with the investigation of stochastic processes in:
(1) GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors (QWIPs),
(2) InGaAs/GaAS Self-Assembled Quantum Dot Infrared Photodetectors (QDIPs)
These devices are characterized by charge carrier density fluctuations exceeding or suppressed than the simple shot noise according to the polarizataion bias. We have developed a noise theory that explains the suppression/enhancement of noise in QWIPs in terms of the modulation effect by the emission/capture of the electrons from the first Quantum Wells occurring in the regime of Fowler-Nordheim (field assisted) tunneling of elementary random events . Noise in devices with an arbitrary number N of Quantum Wells has been also approached by a Langevin Equation with a discrete set of random noise source terms.
